Alopecia

Is a medical term used to describe hair loss or baldness. There are several different types of alopecia, each with its own causes and characteristics.

The most common type of alopecia is androgenetic alopecia, also known as male or female pattern baldness. This type of alopecia is genetic and can be inherited from either parent. It is caused by the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is produced by the body and can cause hair follicles to shrink and stop producing hair.

Other types of alopecia include:

  • Alopecia areata: an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss in patches on the scalp or other areas of the body.
  • Telogen effluvium: a temporary form of hair loss caused by stress, illness, medications, or hormonal changes.
  • Traction alopecia: hair loss caused by pulling or tension on the hair, often due to tight hairstyles such as braids, ponytails, or extensions.
  • Cicatricial alopecia: a group of rare disorders that cause permanent hair loss due to scarring of the scalp.

Treatment for alopecia depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the hair loss. For androgenetic alopecia, medications such as minoxidil and finasteride may be used to slow or stop hair loss and promote new hair growth. Hair transplantation surgery is also an option for some individuals.

For other types of alopecia, treatments may include corticosteroid injections, topical immunotherapy, or changes in medication or hairstyle. At our clinic we also use regenerative treatments for alopecia, including exosomes, stem cells, platelet rich factor, capillary growth factor.
