Symptoms of stroke may include:
- Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, particularly on one side of the body
- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
- Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
- Sudden severe headache with no known cause
Prompt medical attention is critical in the event of a stroke. Treatment will depend on the type and severity of the stroke, but may include:
- Medications: Clot-busting drugs may be used to dissolve blood clots and improve blood flow to the brain. Other medications may be used to prevent further blood clots, reduce blood pressure, or manage symptoms.
- Surgery: In some cases, surgery may be needed to remove a blood clot or repair a damaged blood vessel.
- Rehabilitation: Physical, occupational, and speech therapy may be needed to help regain lost function and improve quality of life.
In order to reduce the risk of stroke, it is important to manage risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes through lifestyle changes and/or medication. Maintaining a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol use can also help reduce the risk of stroke.
